Etched Colonial Style Canisters

Creating your own etched Colonial style canisters are so incredibly easy, and are very reminiscent of styles found in designer kitchen supply boutiques. Create one for every supply in your home such as coffee, tea, sugar, flour, or more!

For this project, you will need:

- A variety of clear canisters, any shape or size with removable lids

- Early American Alphabet Style Stencils (found online at Primitive Stenciling)

- Delta Perm Enamel Air Dry Surface Conditioner

- Delta Perm Enamel White Frost Paint

- Delta Perm Enamel Iridescent Glass Paint in Pearl/Blue

- Sponge brush

- Artist's paintbrush

- Masking tape

- Soap and water

- Paper towels

- Newspaper

Cover your work area well with newspaper. Wash each canister with soap and water. Dry well with paper towels and remove any lids on the canisters. Set the lids aside, as you will not need them until the completion of this project.
TIP: Add additional details to spice up your canisters! Delta Perm Enamel makes a fabulous line of iridescent glass paints in a wide variety of colors. Spice up plain old glass etching by outlining the lettering in color. Or, attach a shaped stencil to the canister to add a touch of variety. The only limit on the design for this project is your imagination, so get creative! This craft idea can also be used for matching spice jars. Select several of matching or a variety of odd sized or shaped apothecary jars and follow the directions as provided.

With the sponge brush, coat an entire canister with Delta Perm Enamel Air Dry Surface Conditioner. Let the glass set for an hour or longer to dry.

Secure an Early American Alphabet Style Stencil to the canister with masking tape. Again using the sponge brush, apply a thick coat of Delta Perm Enamel White Frost Paint for the first letter. Continue this process, filling out the canister label you wish to convey. (Examples: Coffee, tea, flour, sugar, etc.) Let the white frost paint dry for about an hour before removing the stencil and masking tape.

With the artist's paintbrush, outline each letter with Delta Perm Enamel Iridescent Glass Paint in Pearl/Blue. Allow the canister to dry overnight before washing, drying, and filling with your desired item. Continue this process with all your remaining matching glass canisters until you have created a matching set. The paint on these canisters is dishwasher safe when completed.
