Simple Sewing Craft Ideas for Mother's Day

Ten simple sewing ideas that children of all ages can use for creating a Mother's Day gift that mom will love.

One: Create a pillowcase for mom's existing pillows or create her a stuffed pillow of any size. This is a simple project that can be created by hand or with the use of a sewing machine. You can make a pattern yourself or even create either without a pattern.

Two: Create a sachet or bundle of sachets for mom. Simply make and stuff miniature squares and scent them with her favorite oil, potpourri, or other favorite scent. You can create them individually for drawers or shelves or bundle them in a net or strings (or yarn) for hanging.

Three: Simple sewing can create an apron for mom. Make it fancy by sewing on a pre-made ruffle or layer of ruffles, if you think mom will like that. You can make a full body apron or half of an apron that ties around the waist.

Four: Sewing a vest for mom is really very easy. You can do it with a store bought pattern or you can do it from a pattern you create yourself. You can make it out of almost any material and if mom likes fancy add touches you think she will enjoy, such as ribbon bows, conch pieces, beadwork, etc. You can make it simple or elaborate, the choice is yours.

Five: Create a sewing bag for mom. You can put a drawstring in it for closure or use a magnetic closure or series of snaps. Make sure to have lining in it. For the lining you can use the same fabric or use a different one. If you really feel fancy you can use batting to give it a quilted look and feel.

Six: Does mom have a pet she loves? If so you can easily sew a custom-made item for the pet. For example, if she has a bird you can create a personalized bird cover or if she has a dog or cat you can easily sew together a blanket. Perhaps you can use material that has the animal on it or that has an item on it that is related to the pet, such as dog bones or paw prints for the puppy.

Seven: You can easily sew a keepsake pouch for mom to keep her special things in. Be sure to turn under the opening and hem it so stray material and threads are tucked away nicely. You can make this by hand and create it to any size you would like. You can leave the top open or put a nice closure on it such as was suggested for the sewing bag.

Eight: Create a stuffed animal for mom. You can get the help of a family member to draw a pattern or create a simple one yourself. Simply cut two pieces of material, one for the top and one for the bottom. Sew together with right sides of the fabric facing one another and leave a hole big enough for stuffing. Add your stuffing, pushing into place with a long, thin item such as an unsharpened pencil, if necessary and then stitch the opening together. You can create things such as a dog, cat, frog, fish, etc. with relative ease.

Nine: Create a pin cushion for mom's sewing pins. You can sew it in a circle, square, rectangle, or any other shape you like. You can sew or glue items on it for a specialized look, such as eyeballs, jewels, baubles, etc.

Ten: Sew a fun sports item for mom such as a miniature basketball hoop and fabric ball to throw into it. You can enlist the help of dad for putting in a wire to keep the hoop up. Or you can create a miniature football for mom to throw around for fun, or maybe a bowling ball and pins to knock down. Sports items are relatively simple to design and sew and make for a great gift idea for mom if she is a sports enthusiast.

Whatever you decide to sew, just use care in making your stitches straight and have fun. You are sure to create a gift mom will cherish for now and always.
